Over the centuries, Advent was a time to anticipate the coming of Christ into the world. Then, sometime in the late middle ages, Advent became a time to anticipate Christmas, the nativity, and the Kings. In this last century, Advent has become, for too many folks, just a countdown to a holiday. My intent here is not to lift one anticipation as better than another. Instead, I want to point out that the focus on Christ and Christmas has changed.
While our anticipations may have changed, the ultimate message of the season, at least for Christians, remains the same. The meaning of Christmas is that God has done the unthinkable and become vulnerable, that God comes to us as a child, born to a humble family, vulnerable to empire, enemies, and egos. This steady meaning is why we worship, sing and give generously during this season. God's opening to us leads us to open to others.
A few weeks ago, I hope you received our annual appeal letter. I wrote, "Because of you, First continues to trust God's good providence, sustenance, and saving grace. Ministry today is no small challenge, and First is far from perfect, but we nevertheless strive to move forward with hope toward the Kingdom vision we've been given. We know that God will make a way. Your generosity of spirit, financial commitments, and gifts are the hope which makes First a reality; our Worship, TACO, the Arts, acts of Service, and Justice transform human lives daily. Your annual commitments help us plan for the continued expansion of ministry connections. How will you have an impact in 2023? May our gifts bring hope, bring connection and bring the heart of Christ to the heart of this city. "
You also received the Estimate of Giving card. Please take time during this season to prayerfully consider your response, not to First, but to God's providence in your life. Your generosity is a direct reflection of God's gifts to you. Your gifts will be used here at First so that we may continue to be a place that Connects Community to Christ. You may mail in your card, fill out the Card Online or bring it any Sunday through Epiphany to place into the basket on the altar.
